新文明 | New Civilization
On Monday, September 2nd, THIS’12th graders embarked on their long-anticipated overnight camping trip. With huge backpacks, hands full of sleeping bags and tents, and looks of excitement, they were on their way. Over the course of two days, they built their own “civilizations,” constructed their own shelters, cooked their own meals with campfires they started with flint stones, sat together for games of Truth or Dare, and watched the skies for falling meteors. These students have very strong relationships, made even stronger during the camping trip.
Although they pushed each other into piercing cold water during rafting and struggled to withstand their tent-mates’ midnight snores, they enjoyed and appreciated each other’s support and company all the more. A helping hand. An offer to carry a bag. A buddy to go along with to the restroomsite…
They would choose these same lovely people if they were to camp again.
I’m so grateful for this chance to momentarily stay away from electronics and the constant reminders to do work that comes with it, because we are truly able to form deeper connections and understandings of each other when put in an environment without external distractions. I once again felt how supportive and creative this community is and feel honored to be part of it.
It was the first time I saw so many stars. We also had a lot of fun playing frisbee and getting in the water together, as well as cooking food.
I have never thought about how human civilizations were built. We have always been busy with daily trivial matters since we entered G12. The community building trip gave me a new understanding of life. We built our own civilization, climbed the steep hill hand in hand, sat together sharing feelings, learnt outdoor survival skills…Most importantly, we have forgotten the hustle and bustle of the life and watched the starry sky with those wonderful people.
High school life is a non-stop thrill ride.
There is obviously academic pressure as a senior
but there is also social pressure.
Hope this trip can momentarily make you stay away from these pressures.
to discover the strength of unity
to appreciate the companion of friends
to applaud for your outstanding abilities
Let’s live in the moment and take it all in.
